When Words Fall Short, Art Can Help You Speak
Some experiences live beyond language; too complex, too heavy, or too confusing to explain. You may feel stuck, disconnected, or tired of trying to put your emotions into words. Maybe talk therapy hasn’t reached the core of what you’re carrying, or maybe you’re craving a more creative, intuitive way to heal. Art Therapy offers a different way forward. It’s not about being good at art, it’s about having a safe, expressive space where images and creativity can help you explore and begin to heal, in a way that feels true to you.

Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is art therapy, and do I need art skills for it to work?
Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses creative expression, like drawing, or painting to explore thoughts, emotions, and experiences. You do not need any artistic skill at all since the goal isn’t to make professional art. Art therapy is a way to use the creative process as a tool for self-expression and healing. In art therapy, the artwork is just one part of the process. The real focus is how it helps you explore your inner world in a safe and supported way.
How does art therapy help with mental health or emotional issues?
Art can bypass the analytical parts of the brain, allowing clients to access feelings or memories that might be hard to express in words. Art therapy is an evidence-based technique which has shown to be effective in many areas including trauma, anxiety, grief, stress, life transitions, and emotional overwhelm. Through guided art-making and reflective conversation, clients begin to process emotions, develop insight, and build new ways of coping. Many people find art therapy helps them express what words can’t, which can be incredibly relieving and validating.
Can art therapy help with trauma or experiences I don’t feel ready to talk about yet?
Yes, this is one of the areas where art therapy really shines. When words feel too difficult or painful, creating art can be a gentle, non-verbal way to begin processing and releasing what’s stored in the body and mind. The art becomes a bridge to healing, and clients can move at their own pace without pressure to talk in detail. Many people find that art therapy provides a safer entry point to addressing trauma or deeply held emotions.
Does your team specialize in other treatment areas?
Yes our team does specialize in various treatment areas! Explore our Therapy Services here.
What is the cost of therapy and is it covered by insurance?
We offer in-person and online counselling services for individuals and relationships. See our rates here.
Many benefit programs cover the cost of Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCCs). Please check with your benefits provider to see if this is available to you.
We offer direct billing options to certain insurance companies. If direct billing is not an available option, we provide a detailed receipt following each session. Follow your insurers instructions for submitting the receipt through your extended health benefits plan (often this can be done online).
We invite you to contact us with any questions to explore these options.
What is the rescheduling and cancellation policy?
We kindly require 48-hours notice for cancellation or rescheduling to ensure fairness to you, your counsellor, and other clients. Our cancellation fee is the full cost of the counselling session.
Where is As You Are Counselling located?
Our clinic is located in Langley, next to the 200 Street highway exit. We are easily accessible from Surrey, Maple Ridge, Abbotsford and other surrounding cities.
We also offer the convenience of online counselling for those who cannot make it in-person.
Learn more on our Contact page.
How many sessions does it take before I start to feel better?
This really depends on the issue at hand and the context in which you are experiencing the problem. At the first session, you and your counsellor will discuss the optimal frequency and likely duration of counselling. With more complex and long standing issues, you will likely need more sessions to untangle things and build up internal stability.
Therapy is a process. That said, most of our clients experience some relief early on in the therapy process, and indicate that they are experiencing positive shifts in their lives after 4-6 sessions.
