What is neurodiversity and neurodiversity-affirming counselling?
In simple terms, neurodiversity refers to the limitless variety of human minds on the planet, in which no two minds can ever be exactly alike.
Neurodiversity-affirming is the idea of individuals having differences in their abilities and the way they interact with the world – differences which are not considered deficits or a disorder. It’s the view which includes interpreting everyone as a person of worth and accepting people’s differences in how they think, learn and communicate.
We believe in accepting and valuing the strengths and abilities of individuals with neurological differences and providing everyone with support and accommodations tailored to their specific needs so they can thrive. The phrase “nothing about us, without us” is an important call to change to allow individuals with neurological differences to have a say in the decisions which affect their lives. Within our counselling space, you are the expert of your world and are constently involved in how you would like your counselling journey to be. We believe in ongoing consent, continued learning, and active listening. In our inclusive space we value and respect who you are and would be honoured to be a part of your healing journey.
If you are curious if neurodiversity-affirming counselling is the right fit for you, we invite you to schedule a free 15-minute consultation with our specialist Maitri Gupta here.
What if I don’t relate to the terms used on this website?
Individuals may resonate with a diverse set of terms to describe their experiences. We use certain words to encompass a broad spectrum of neurotypes and conditions while striving to respect and honour unique identities and language preferences. Our values include creating a space where individuals feel seen, respected and supported, regardless of the terms used to express their experiences.
Are you able to provide a diagnosis for ADHD, autism, or other neurotypes?
No, our Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCCs) cannot provide a formal diagnosis for ADHD, autism, or other neurotypes. Our RCC’s can provide clinical counselling support to nativigate and manage conditions related to a diagnosis.
