Frequently Asked Questions

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy designed to help people heal from trauma, distressing life experiences, overwhelming memories and much more. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (often eye movements, tapping, or sounds) while guiding you to process the memory in a safe, controlled way. This helps the brain reprocess stuck or unhealed memories to alleviate intense or triggering emotions. EMDR can be effective in many areas, including PTSD, anxiety, anger, relationship concerns, and grief, as well as, help a wide range of individuals, including first responders, athletes and neurodivergent individuals.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is widely recognized as one of the most effective treatments for trauma and PTSD. Dozens of clinical studies have shown EMDR therapy can significantly reduce symptoms of anxiety, flashbacks, and emotional distress; often more quickly than traditional talk therapy. Many people report noticeable improvement in as little as a few sessions. It’s endorsed by major health organizations, including the World Health Organization and the American Psychiatric Association, as a first-line treatment for trauma and related disorders.

At As You Are Counselling, our EMDR-trained therapists have seen clients experience deep emotional relief, improved self-esteem, and greater daily functioning as they process and release painful memories.

Not necessarily. One of the unique things about EMDR is that you don’t have to describe every detail of the event out loud for it to be effective. Your EMDR therapist will work with you to understand your unique journey but the deeper work happens internally while you process. You will be gently guided through the process and your EMDR therapist will prioritize your emotional safety every step of the way.

Although EMDR was originally developed for PTSD, it’s now used to treat a wide range of challenges including:

– Trauma and abuse (recent or long term)
– Anxiety and panic attacks
– Grief and loss
– Phobias
– Low self-esteem or shame
– Stress
– Relationship concerns
– Car accidents or natural disasters
– Effects of childhood neglect or emotional wounds
– Performance anxiety in sports, academics, or the arts

Many people also use EMDR to address stuck emotional patterns that haven’t shifted with traditional talk therapy.

This really depends on the issue at hand and the context in which you are experiencing the problem. At the first session, you and your counsellor will discuss the optimal frequency and likely duration of counselling. With more complex and long standing issues, you will likely need more sessions to untangle things and build up internal stability.

Therapy is a process. That said, most of our clients experience some relief early on in the therapy process, and indicate that they are experiencing positive shifts in their lives after 4-6 sessions.
