When Being Yourself Still Feels Like a Risk
You’ve spent so much energy navigating spaces where you’ve had to explain, defend, or hide parts of who you are. Maybe you’ve been misgendered, stereotyped, or quietly dismissed. That kind of invalidation leaves a mark. It’s hard to feel safe, seen, or fully yourself when the world often isn’t built for you. The stress, anxiety, and loneliness of not being understood can become a weight you carry every day.
Does this sound familiar?
- Feeling unseen, misunderstood, or dismissed in daily life
- Struggling with gender identity, transition, or relationships
- Anxiety, depression, or trauma from rejection or discrimination
- Longing for support that affirms your lived experiences
- Feeling isolated or disconnected from support or community
- Navigating cultural, religious or generational expectations
We Help You Heal
Experience Therapy Where You Don’t Have to Defend Who You Are
How Queer-Affirming Therapy Can Support You
We don’t expect you to explain who you are or justify your experiences. Whether you’re navigating identity, relationships, community, or the weight of rejection, we offer a space where you’re affirmed exactly as you are. You may be processing shame, isolation, anxiety, trauma, or simply seeking support in a world that hasn’t always made room for you. Our therapists walk alongside you with care, curiosity, and respect. This isn’t about fixing who you are ~ it’s about honouring your truth with support that feels not only safe but authentic.
As you continue your therapy journey, you may notice:
- Exploring your identity without judgment or the need to explain
- Building stronger boundaries and healthier relationships
- Better navigating coming out, gender exploration, or transition
- Creating space for healing, self-compassion, and authentic growth
- Greater management of anxiety, stress or internalized shame
- Processing complex family, cultural, or societal expectations

Frequently Asked Questions
Does your team specialize in other treatment areas?
Yes our team does specialize in various treatment areas! Explore our Therapy Services here.
What is the cost of therapy and is it covered by insurance?
We offer in-person and online counselling services for individuals and relationships. See our rates here.
Many benefit programs cover the cost of Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCCs). Please check with your benefits provider to see if this is available to you.
We offer direct billing options to certain insurance companies. If direct billing is not an available option, we provide a detailed receipt following each session. Follow your insurers instructions for submitting the receipt through your extended health benefits plan (often this can be done online).
We invite you to contact us with any questions to explore these options.
What is the rescheduling and cancellation policy?
We kindly require 48-hours notice for cancellation or rescheduling to ensure fairness to you, your counsellor, and other clients. Our cancellation fee is the full cost of the counselling session.
Where is As You Are Counselling located?
Our clinic is located in Langley, next to the 200 Street highway exit. We are easily accessible from Surrey, Maple Ridge, Abbotsford and other surrounding cities.
We also offer the convenience of online counselling for those who cannot make it in-person.
Learn more on our Contact page.
How many sessions does it take before I start to feel better?
This really depends on the issue at hand and the context in which you are experiencing the problem. At the first session, you and your counsellor will discuss the optimal frequency and likely duration of counselling. With more complex and long standing issues, you will likely need more sessions to untangle things and build up internal stability.
Therapy is a process. That said, most of our clients experience some relief early on in the therapy process, and indicate that they are experiencing positive shifts in their lives after 4-6 sessions.
