Frequently Asked Questions
What is relationship counselling, and how can it help?
Relationship counselling is a form of therapy designed to help individuals or couples work through challenges in a wide-range of relationship structures, including romantic, familial, professional, and more. Our relationship therapists provide a safe and neutral space where all parties can express themselves, explore underlying issues, and develop healthier communication patterns. Discover support to strengthen connection, resolve conflicts, and build more respectful understanding.
Does relationship counselling work if one partner doesn’t want to attend?
While relationship counselling is most effective when both partners are willing to participate, individual counselling can still be helpful. If one partner is hesitant or unable to attend, the other can still gain valuable insights and coping strategies that may improve the overall dynamic. If both partners are open to the process, it increases the likelihood of resolving issues together.
Can therapy help after an affair or broken trust?
Yes, relationship counselling can play a crucial role in rebuilding trust after infidelity or betrayal. Healing from a breach of trust takes time and involves addressing underlying issues that contributed to the situation. Therapy helps both partners explore their feelings, understand the root causes of the betrayal, and learn how to rebuild trust through open communication, empathy, and accountability. Discover how to successfully rebuild your relationship with our relationship therapists.
Do my partner and I have to be struggling in order to go to relationship counselling?
Not at all. Relationship counselling can be a proactive and supportive space for any individuals or relationships looking to strengthen their connection. Counselling can improve communication, navigate present or future life transitions, deepen emotional intimacy, and more. Attending counselling before major issues arise can help prevent misunderstandings from turning into deeper conflicts. Whether you’re facing challenges or simply want to build a stronger foundation, discover how relationship counselling can support your growth in a guided, neutral environment.
Does your team specialize in other treatment areas?
Yes our team does specialize in various treatment areas! Explore our Therapy Services here.
What is the cost of therapy and is it covered by insurance?
We offer in-person and online counselling services for individuals and relationships. See our rates here.
Many benefit programs cover the cost of Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCCs). Please check with your benefits provider to see if this is available to you.
We offer direct billing options to certain insurance companies. If direct billing is not an available option, we provide a detailed receipt following each session. Follow your insurers instructions for submitting the receipt through your extended health benefits plan (often this can be done online).
We invite you to contact us with any questions to explore these options.
What is the rescheduling and cancellation policy?
We kindly require 48-hours notice for cancellation or rescheduling to ensure fairness to you, your counsellor, and other clients. Our cancellation fee is the full cost of the counselling session.
Where is As You Are Counselling located?
Our clinic is located in Langley, next to the 200 Street highway exit. We are easily accessible from Surrey, Maple Ridge, Abbotsford and other surrounding cities.
We also offer the convenience of online counselling for those who cannot make it in-person.
Learn more on our Contact page.
How many sessions does it take before I start to feel better?
This really depends on the issue at hand and the context in which you are experiencing the problem. At the first session, you and your counsellor will discuss the optimal frequency and likely duration of counselling. With more complex and long standing issues, you will likely need more sessions to untangle things and build up internal stability.
Therapy is a process. That said, most of our clients experience some relief early on in the therapy process, and indicate that they are experiencing positive shifts in their lives after 4-6 sessions.
