Is counselling covered by insurance and do you offer direct billing?

Our therapists are Registered Clinical Counsellors. Most major insurance providers cover the cost of therapy provided by a Registered Clinical Counsellor. We encourage you to check with your insurance to ensure our services are covered.

We provide a detailed receipt following each session. Follow your insurers instructions for submitting the receipt through your extended health benefits plan (often this can be done online).

We offer direct billing options to certain insurance companies.

We invite you to contact us with any questions to explore these options.

What’s the point of therapy?

Our role at As You Are Counselling is to support the understanding of your experiences; allowing you to become more of who you are. Through the alliance between you and your mental health therapist, your sense of confidence will likely grow as you gain more insight and awareness into yourself. You may find the experiences posing difficulties in the past, present, or future become less unsettling as you develop more acceptance and care toward yourself. Counselling can create new ways of being, promote taking action in your life, and develop compassion and understanding for others.

How long will counselling take until I see benefits?

Counselling is an individual process unique to you, meaning your counselling journey may look differently from others’.

We encourage weekly or bi-weekly sessions at first, depending on your needs. People usually average between 8 to 12 sessions to see some benefits before choosing less frequent appointments. Some people may need less sessions, while others may require more.

Certain people may wish to work with a counsellor on an ongoing basis to maintain their mental health and well-being.

Ultimately, counselling depends on your goals and willingness to do the work.

The frequency and amount of sessions will be determined through a collaborative effort with you and your therapist. Book a free 20-minute consultation here to talk to one our our counsellors.

I don't want people to know I am seeking therapy!

We are serious about confidentially. The only people who would know are those you choose to share about your counselling experience with. Our conversations are confidential, and any notes taken during our sessions are stored securely with software which meets or exceeds security and privacy standards. Outside of our counselling sessions, if we bump into each other in public, we will not greet you (unless greeted) out of respect for your privacy (not because we dislike or are trying to avoid you). Subject to common law and statutory exceptions to confidentiality include the following:

  • When a child or vulnerable adult is or may be at risk of abuse or neglect or in need of protection.
  • If the counsellor believes that the client is at clear risk of imminent harm or danger (e.g., suicide risk).
  • If the counsellor believes that another person is at clear risk of imminent harm or danger (e.g., homicide risk).
  • To comply with a legal order (e.g., subpoena), or if the disclosure is otherwise required or authorized by law.
  • If there is a medical emergency, we will contact either emergency services or your emergency contact provided, if you are unable to respond.
  • For clinical consultation or supervision from other professionals, in order to receive feedback, for professional growth and development, and to ensure the quality of client care. The information discussed will not reveal your identity and is kept confidential between counsellors.
