Before Even Considering Mental Health Support, Let’s Pause

For many of us, there are aspects of our lives we would like to change. The difficult part is admitting it to ourselves and taking some sort of action. You may not know what to do, and the uncertainty of what may happen invites reluctance. Moving forward and implementing the so-called necessary changes in our lives is challenging. It sometimes sounds easy, yet it’s rarely straightforward? The important part is a seed has been planted. An awareness is developed, and a curiosity about yourself begins to emerge.

The Fear of Admitting the Seed to Yourself

The awareness of I “should” or “could” be doing something different at the time feels like a nuisance. With its less-than-desirable unannounced timing into the present moment of your life.

There is nothing “wrong” or “broken” about you.

Maybe you’ve known for a while now and weren’t sure what to do, so you left it as it was, tucking it away for a rainy day. Or it could’ve been something you’ve never even thought about much until recently. Forming what feels like a tight grasp on your life. It becomes like a volume knob which has been turned up, and it sometimes feels darn near impossible to turn it down.

What should I do now? For some, nothing. It continues to be swept beneath the rug for various personal reasons. Then one day, something happens. No, it’s not as cheesy as I woke up one day and decided I needed counselling, kind of a eureka moment. It’s the seed being planted, showing awareness of the situation.

Yup, take it all in. I’m here to share with you, nothing is “wrong” or “broken” about you. It’s the courage and the steps you’ve taken to get to this moment. The fear of admitting it to yourself. Along with the willingness to explore the uncertainty of what has been happening to you. It doesn’t matter how long it took you; here you are now.

The Past Provides Water for the Seed to Grow

We sometimes forget to slow down to reflect on these moments and experiences which have led us to take sharp turns and detours in our lives. The past can be a source of knowledge. Who better to seek such knowledge than from our past selves?

An alliance between yourself and a trusted counsellor builds support. Within a safe space it is an invitation to be open and honest to explore these seeds in our past, present, and future. Being vulnerable with a counsellor may feel intimidating. Yet, the benefits outweigh the initial nervousness. How come? When you understand more about who you are, and what you want. The more confident you become, and life may feel a little less unsettling.

When we understand more about who we are and what we want, life becomes less unsettling.

If you are not ready to seek counselling, talk to people you trust and feel comfortable sharing. It takes a lot of courage to seek support – be gentle with yourself.

Reflecting on the Seed of Awareness

A takeaway I invite you to courageously reflect on is what was it? Or who was it? Which motivated you to wish for change, either something about you or from your life?
